  • Truck Bed Paint and Protection

The premium selection of Rust-Oleum Truck Bed Coating products provides a fast and practical way to extend the longevity of vehicles. Whether it's to keep new trucks looking their best or to revitalize rusted, weathered beds after years of use, these rust-resistant formulas ensure exceptional protection from the elements and wear. Versatile paints can also be used on fenders, step areas, trailer floors and more.

Attractive Finish That Extends the Life of Truck Beds

Premium Bed Liner: Built for the Long Haul

Weather, rust and wear can cause major damage to truck beds over time, shortening their usable life and leaving unsightly marks. Rust-Oleum truck bed coatings all contain the powerful Stops Rust formula to halt corrosion and protect vulnerable metal from moisture. Specialized textured paints also include fade, chip, and scratch resistance to ensure that surfaces stay sealed and attractive through harsh conditions.

Use on new truck beds to ensure they stay in top condition or on old, worn beds to restore them to like-new quality.

    Choosing the Right Coating

    Aerosol

Spray on aerosols go on fast and make it easier to create a uniform, drip-free finish. They are ideal for coating tight spaces, corners and curves where brushes may have trouble reaching.

    Brush-On

Traditional quarts or gallons can be used with a brush, roller or paint spraying system. They allow for more direct control during application and offer greater total coverage per can.

    Clear Coat

Clear coats allow for the same degree of protection as opaque coatings while still letting the beauty of the original surface show. Great for keeping new truck beds looking their best.

    Proper Preparation for Better Results

    Remove Paint and Rust

Remove any loose paint or rust from surface. For better final coat adhesion, lightly sand surface with medium grit sand paper.

    Thoroughly Clean Surface

Remove all dirt, grime, grease and residue from area to be painted. Allow to dry completely.

    Mask Off Areas

Use painter's tape and coverings to mask off areas that you do not want coated. This will help avoid overspray errors.

    Apply Paint

Using method indicated on label, apply 2-3 light coats. Refer to full instructions on can for recoating times.

I welded an off road rear bumper kit and I had to choose a paint. I was going to use semi gloss black, but a good friend convinced me to try out this paint. I am thoroughly impressed by this bed liner paint. It has the right about of pebbly texture and adhesion is great. But then again, I prepped and primed the metal properly. See my 2 pics.

Prep tips if your''e a newbie to painting on metal:
1- Clean the heck out of it with soap and water. Wipe dry
2 Clean again with acetone or brake cleaner. I prefer acetone.
3- If the metal has a slick finish, take some kind of abrasive to it. This allows the primer to grab onto it. And since you''re going to use this pebbly textured paint, you won''t see any lines anyways.
    4- Repeat steps 1 and 2
5- Prime. 2 coats is good enough
6- Paint. 1st two coats should be light coats. Paint the hard to reach places like inside corners first. Paint all joints and edges. Then finish by spraying all the long big surfaces.
7- Last coat can be a little heavier.

    Couple of additional tips:
    - This stuff needs to be kept at room temperature. The "stuff" in there needs to be shaken up quite often in between spray runs. Shake it often is what I''m saying.
    - Clean the tip w/ a clean piece of paper towel soaked in brake cleaner or acetone. Don''t let the paint/pebbly stuff coagulate on the tip and esp inside the tip.
    - When you''re done painting, turn the can upside down, point it in a direction you don''t care about, clear the nozzle, and then clean the tip.

So I originally purchased 3 cans of this hoping it would be enough to cover the truck topper I built. I ended up needing a 4th can unfortunately. I knew I was taking my chances with this from all of the reviews but I couldn''t find another product that had better reviews, plus its Rust-Oleum, right? Yeaaahhhhhh not so much.

First can sprayed well for about the first 30 seconds then only aerosol came out. I shook the can for another 10-15 seconds and got 1 spray out of it. Shook the can again, 1 spray out of it. I think you''re starting to get the picture here, if not, I shook the can again and got one spray out of it. Turning the can on it''s side seemed to spray a little better so I tried that. YES!!! I got THREE sprays out of it!! This isn''t going as planned.

After struggling to get through the first can, I knew I still had two more to go. So I shook up can number 2 and off I went. This can sprayed well for the first 30 seconds or so also. Maybe this one is better? Ohhhhhhh wait, no, there it is. Nothing but aerosol, again. So I turn the can on it''s side, same as can number one. What if I decided to turn it upside down, what''s the worst that can happen? Hey look at that! It''s working! I continued spraying this entire can in the upside down position and it worked without issue.

So fast forward to today, I get the 4th can in the mail because the first 2 covered the bottom side and I just didn''t have enough with one can to finish the top side. On to can number three we go. What''s the chances this one works any better? The chances were pretty slim but this can fought against the odds and showed the other two cans why you always save the best for last! This can worked ALMOST flawlessly the entire time, the only issue was excessive dripping from the nozzle. I did not have to invert this can to get it to spray, it worked great.

I get the 4th can out of the newly delivered box, shake it like a crying baby and go outside to the topper rack. I get one, yes you read that right, ONE spray out of this one and it completely stops. No bed liner, no aerosol, NOTHING. Well that''s not overly surprising at this point but it''s still surprising that nothing is coming out. So I shake it harder and try it again. One more spray and then you hear it just go silent. Hmmm, maybe bad nozzle. So I pull one off the third can that I just finished using since it was flawless. Now I have the ultimate spray nozzle on the 4th can ready to do some serious business here. Wait, what''s that noise? Oh it''s the birds chirping, why do they seem so loud? Ahhhhh because the newly swapped nozzle didn''t make a difference and there''s no sound coming out with the spray. I take the can in the house, let it sit in warm water for about 15 minutes and take it back outside. Surely that helped. And it did!! I got 2 sprays out of it this time and then it gave up the ghost.

So LONG story short, save yourself some time and money, buy something else. Being 1 for 4 isn''t bad in a baseball game, but it isn''t great when you''re trying to get some bed liner to spray, or the chances of not getting your significant other pregnant.

In Amazon''s defense, I contacted customer service and they''re sending me a replacement can. Let''s see if I can get that batting average up to 2 for 5 like a boss! I''ll update this after the new can shows up.

    ***UPDATE***

So I decided to run to my local home improvement store after writing this original review. Bought 2 more cans instead of waiting for the replacement from Amazon. I get home, shake them up and attempt to use the first can, now can number 5 overall. I get one good solid line of spray out of the can and it just stops dead in its tracks. Nothing is coming out. I shake it up, try again, nothing. This is unreal.

On to can number 2 from the local hardware store. I shake it up, point it at an area that still needs coverage and BAM it''s working! YESSSSSSS! Ohhh wait, what''s this? It stopped working too. In about the same amount of time as the last can. I shake it up. Again, nothing. Neither of these 2 cans sprayed more than 5 seconds. This just can''t be happening.

So I grabbed my receipt, head back to the home improvement store and explain to the person at the returns counter what happened. "Oh that''s pretty common with these. If you go get 2 more cans we can replace these for you." Those were the words of encouragement I was waiting to hear for this project. This pain I''ve been suffering has been levied across the board to all who have dared to go where I''m going.

I get home with cans number 3 and 4 from the hardware store, cans number 7 and 8 for the project. Keep in mind, I only needed 4 cans to do this small job originally. Now I''m shaking up can number 7 like one of those electronic paint mixers. I can no longer feel my arms so I pop the cap off, take a deep breath and start spraying. This can ranked right up there with can number 3. It''s THE BEST CAN EVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! I spray that can until it''s empty and call it good with the project. Can number 8 is sitting on standby and can number 9 is on it''s way from Amazon still.

Moral of the story. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PRODUCT. I''ve "used" 7 cans from 2 different places, 2 different orders from Amazon and 2 trips to the hardware store. In the words of Obi Wan Kenobi, "these are not the cans you''re looking for. Move along."

YMMV. I read multiple negative reviews about this product and almost did not try it. Much time spent stalking Jeep YJ boards finally brought me around. I had black nerf bars that were in terrible shape due to my classic Wrangler''s new life in my office parking lot all day.

I followed the directions of each can to the letter. I even bought the spray handle. I knew I was fully committed after sanding the bars down and applying acetone as directed. I even meticulously wiped the nozzle with a rag after each spray. This stuff is amazing. It applied evenly, looks great and is easy to maintain. I wish I had done this year''s ago. I have since sprayed everything metal not painted Green or chrome on the exterior of my Jeep. Undercarriage, frame, wheel wells, plastic fenders, side mirrors, yes to all. It all looks brand new. Previous off road damage, tree scrapes, etc covered and hidden and it is all holding up great. No touch up required so far.

However I would not bedliner the interior of the tub with this. In fact I do not think it goes on thick enough for it''s intended purpose as a bedliner. If I decide to pull the interior carpet or buy a pickup I would much rather use the thicker roll on stuff.

That being said, used as spray paint protection, I really cannot rave enough. I no longer am a slave to armor all to protect my 20 year old fender flares. Just wipe and rinse off. Every Wrangler owner with rubber flares should do this. I feel sorry for every TJ and JK owner I see with chalky white faded flares (YJ owners take better care of our rigs!). Take them off and spray them with this stuff. I even rehabbed my kids radio flyer wagon. I plan on painting my old bike next and the paint is starting to fade on my hood hmmmmmm....

Updated 10/3/21: Please retract the use on plastic. It looked good for about a year then would start to slowly flake off. I got sick of pulling them off every year to touch up. But you better believe my new double tubed bumper got sprayed before I even mounted it. The hunt continues for more metal to spray. Cheers.

This stuff is horrible. I bought 3 cans as well as the spray handle. I shook the can for several minutes and attached the spray handle. I held the can upright and started spraying. Mostly propellent can out, so I turned the can different directions until it started coming out but each time the can was upright it would only expel propellant. I did this several times and still the same thing. It was 87F outside and the cans hold been on the UPS truck all day when they arrived so they weren''t cold. When it did spray it was a heavy stream and caused runs. I wish I could return the other 2 cans because I didn''t even want to use them. I could do a better job with a brush and roller.

Don’t think of it as bedliner material. Think of it as very durable spray paint. I’ve used them all and this is the longest lasting spray paint around. Mask off and spray the trim on your car/truck and it will last 4 years without fading and needing a respray. It looks quite natural as a flat to semi gloss black on your nerfbars, truck steps, bumpers, door handles and bedrail protectors. Having a problem with the tips clogging? Give yourself a fighting chance and soak the cans for 15 minutes in super hot water or leave the cans in the sun. They need to be shook up for a while maybe 2-3 minutes per can. When done spraying, hold the can upside down and spray until no material comes out, this will clear the tip for the next spray session.

Really not impressed. I bought 15 of these for painting an old pontoon boat''s side panels, should have only needed 10 but application issues made it really inefficient. The finished product ended up looking pretty good but these cans are really picky. The nozzles clog up so fast on them it''s silly. I had 3 cans that literally never sprayed properly from the beginning unless I used an aggressive up/down shaking motion while spraying which makes for a mess and unclean pattern not to mention wears the arm out (shaking required some force, it wasn''t minor). Any can that I stopped on prior to running out never worked properly again. I''m not talking coming back the next day or hours later... if I simply stopped to tape up the next section that can was toast and if I got it to spray it would splatter ugly thick blobs out. As for the "bedliner" portion it''s not really what I imagined, it''s pretty much well just like smooth normal paint... maybe just a hint of rough to it but certainly not sandy texture of any kind. That is actually what I expected though and worked out great for my purposes.

It doesn’t build up to a thick coating even after three applications. The texture is too smooth. The cans clogged before empty as well (Yes I shook the can constantly between spraying and did not pause for more than a few seconds after letting up on the spray head; the clogs occurred inside the can, not at the discharge nozzle so cleaning with solvent did not clear the clog).
I used two cans for the job in the picture.
